In Polish, instead of saying “Merry Christmas” to greet someone on Christmas Eve, people say, “Wesolych Świąt”. In Poland, people usually bake the piernik or the gingerbread, in different shapes like heart or animals, during the Advent. Decorations are also made during this time. The Christmas trees are the main attraction just like anywhere else and the same can be decorated with garlands and other homemade ornaments.
People of Poland prefer to use homemade decorations for their house or trees and the same may include painted eggshells, shiny red apples, walnuts, wrapped chocolate shapes, candles, etc. A star or a tree topper is put on the top of each tree. Sparklers may be hung on the branches to give a wintery ambiance. Christmas Eve usually starts with fasting and ends with a feast. The feast starts after the appearance of the first star. This Christmas feast does not include red meat, only fish which is usually carp. The supper also includes dessert, usually a pie. Christmas is of course not over until the exchange of gifts which is usually done after the feast.
